Milford haven Coastguard paged the crew and requested that Aberystwyth inshore lifeboat launch to assist a sailing yacht that was encountering difficultys trying to enter Aberystwyth harbour. The yacht had used there VHF radio to request assistance. The Lifeboat launched from its slipway and found the yacht entering the harbour entrance under sail; having requested assistance due to a defective engine . The lifeboat went alongside and checked that all aboard were ok. Due to prevailing conditions, it was decided to tow the vessel to its berth at Aberystwyth Marina. After the boat had been made secure at its moorings the lifeboat was returned to station and recovered, refuelled and ready for service by 14.04

Saturday night was the Annual Lifeboat crews dinner, it was also the official retirement dinner of three of the crew. Dai Davies, Geraint Wheeler and Ron Barclay all retired this year. In their time together on the crew they saved over 300 lives between them. The dinner was held at the Belle Vue Hotel in Aberystwyth. As well as the retirements being marked and the three crew being awarded certificates, other awards were also awarded on the night for long service. There was also a disco and a speech by "Dai the chef" TV chef and past member of the crew. There were over 120 people in attendance including Captain Hugh Fogarty and the regional inspectors for Aberystwyth. The evening went very well and a good time was had by all. The crew were paged, and put on Immediate Readiness, a call had come in from a person who was possibly going to jump from Constitution hill. After the crew got ready and put the boat on immediate readiness, the Coastguard then required the Lifeboat to launch and search the cliffs and rocks from constitution hill northward, as no one had been located on constitution hill. The lifeboat launched and was on scene almost immediately, the lifeboat began to search northwards, after searching upto Clarach it again searched back along southwards. After searching north and south a number of times, the Crew were informed that the call had been located coming from another town and that the call had been a Hoax. The lifeboat, cliff rescue team, shore helpers and Police were all stood down. The lifeboat was then refuelled and ready for the next time the pagers go off!

Whilst returning to Harbour on the previous shout the lifeboat crew noticed that other Sailing boats were also in the Harbour, one of which looked like it may need assistance. The university sailing clubs Rescue, had sustained a steering failure just before the previous shout and so had had to return to Harbour! The Coastguard and Lifeboat agreed that a check should be made of the other vessels. The lifeboat approached one small sailing boat that appeared to be having trouble with the changing weather. Two of the people on board had also been in the water, and had become very cold. After the offer of a tow, they happily accepted, and a tow was made fast and the sailing boat was towed into the Harbour and the occupants safely landed. The boat was then recovered, in a very low water and refuelled ready for its next service!

Whilst most of the Crew were at work looking forward to the end of the day, a sudden burst of beeping from there pagers and the crew left there ordinary jobs and headed to the Lifeboat station.The Crew got kitted up, and launched the boat into a very low tide. The GreenPeace Ship 'Rainbow Warrior' was moored up in the bay, and on seeing the small Sailing Dinghy capsize, and after not righting itself they launched there own RIB to go and give assistance. As the lifeboat approached, it was agreed to transfer the tow, so that the Greenpeace RIB could return to the ship. The Lifeboat then towed the casualty and its two crew back to the University Sailing clubs slipway in the Harbour

Whilst dealing with another incident, the police informed Milford Haven Coastguard that a person was trapped on Constitution hill. It was High Tide at the time. The crew were paged for the second time today with a "launch ILB" message, the crew assembled and the lifeboat launched very quickly, and proceeded to constitution hill. Borth Inshore Lifeboat (D Class) were also paged to assist! The casualty was located, and the Coastguard Cliff rescue team descended to the area where the casualty was. The Casualty had been cut off by the tide and had tried to climb out! The cliff rescue team lowered the casualty to the foot of Constitution hill, where Borth transferred him to Aberystwyth Lifeboat. Returning to Harbour, the casualty was very happy to have been rescued,and thanked all involved, the lifeboat was then recovered washed down and refuelled ready for service.

A small motorboat out for a days fishing called up Milford Haven Coastguard asking for assistance when they discovered that there engine would not start! The coastguard Paged the Lifeboat crew, who made there way to the station and got kitted up and launched the boat, it was just after low tide and the boat and tractor made there way down river untill sufficient depth was found to launch the boat. The new tractor performing effortlessly in the difficult conditions. The casualty vessel was situated approximately one mile west of Blaenplwyf aerial. The lifeboat made good speed to the casualty, when it arrived on scene a crew member was transferred to the boat along with a tow line. The Casualty was then towed back to Aberystwyth Harbour. The recent training with low water launches and recovery's was performed without a hitch and the casualty was escorted to her berth, after which the lifeboat was recovered!

Aberystwyth Lifeboat launched to assist Borth, Aberdovey and Barmouth lifeboats as well as RAF valley rescue helicopter who had been searching well north of Aberystwyth since early daybreak. As the lifeboat was heading north to assist, Aberdovey lifeboat informed Milford Haven coastguard that the canoeist had been found safe and well and he was on his way to Barmouth. All lifeboats were returned to station, after talking to the casualty he informed the Lifeboat that he had spent the night ashore unaware that his friends had reported him missing and he was going to continue on his journey. Aberdovey lifeboat accompanied him some of the way, and then also returned to station. The canoeists friends were also informed of his safety. With a long night and a happy outcome everyone left and returned to work or bed !!!

During the afternoon of 2nd october a canoeist set of from Aberystwyth on a trip to Barmouth, if the person got tired or did not make it before darkness he would pull up on the shore and make camp for the night, ringing his friend who was going to join him. By late Wednesday night nothing had been heard, it could possible be that the canoeist had landed safely but was in an area of no phone signal and had no way of contacting his friend. A call was then put in for a suspected missing person between Aberystwyth and Barmouth, so Aberystwyth Lifeboat was paged at 00.30 on Thursday morning to begin a shoreline search. Lifeboats were also scrambled from Borth (D Class lifeboat), Aberdovey (Atlantic 75 lifeboat) and Barmouth (Mersey Class lifeboat) The coastguard teams from Aberystwtyh, Borth, Aberdovey and Barmouth were also tasked to carry out a shoreline and land search. Helicopters from RAF Valley and RAF Chivenor were also used during the search. All the lifeboats searched along there own area of coastline, upto the next stations area and out to sea. Using powerfull search lights, Parachute illumination flares and night vision sights a thorough search was carried out when Aberystwyth lifeboat had been searching for nearly 1 and a half hours and had searched up and down the coast, they were stood down and allowed to return to station. By this time Borth Lifeboat had also been stood down, Aberdovey and Barmouth were still searching as was Chivenor Helicopter. As the Lifeboat was returning to station news was received that the Casualtys mobile phone signal had been picked up by Cricieth Aerial and the search area was concentrated in the north around Barmouth and the Shell island area. The casualty had not been found when the crew dispersed to go back to bed. Further News will be posted here as it happens.

For the Third time in a day the crew were paged with a "launch ILB" message. It had been reported that a person had gone missing from the local hospital, and it was feared she may have gone into the sea. The crew assembled and started to get kitted up when the station was informed that the Missing person had been found safe and well and that the lifeboat would not be needed.. With this bit of good news, the lifeboat was stood down and did not launch.

Not long after returning from the previous shout, the pagers were again 'beeping' to summon the crew, a lot of the crew were still in the area and the boat was soon launched to go to the assistance of a large yacht that had Broken down approximately 1 mile out from Aberystwyth Harbour entrance. The yacht which is one of the biggest in the local marina had put in a call to the Coastguard asking for assistance. The Lifeboat and its equipment were soon on scene, a crew man was put aboard the Yacht and a tow line was securely fastened. The boat was then towed back to harbour and skillfully maneuvered into its berth. The lifeboat was then recovered and refuelled ready for service.

Milford haven Coastguard had received a message from a Yacht on route to Aberystwyth Harbour, that his fuel was very low and he might have difficulty's getting to and entering Aberystwyth Harbour. Some of the crew were still around the station from the mornings exercise and so where quickly changed when the pagers went off. The lifeboat launched down the slip and made its way out to sea, just as it was leaving the harbour entrance the Casualty's Yacht passed inside, the lifeboat then accompanied the Yacht to its mooring. After a quick chat and check over the lifeboat returned to station. R Barclay who is to Retire from service on Tuesday was happy to be on what might be his last shout.

The police had received reports that a person had been seen in the water off Constitution Hill. They contacted Milford Haven Coastguard and Requested the Launch of the Lifeboat, the crew were paged at 19.26 and the boat was launched. The Aberystwyth Lifeboat proceeded to constitution hill and could see nothing in the immediate area, so the boat began a search of the area. Other boats from the area also joined in, and the Police helicopter arrived on scene shortly after the lifeboat. The RAF Valley Search and Rescue helicopter was also on route to the scene to assist. After a short space of time the Police helicopter saw something in the water with their thermal imaging camera and immediately directed the lifeboat to the area. The casualty was taken aboard the boat, and the crew checked her over and kept her warm. She was conscious but very cold, it was decided to land the casualty on the main beach at Aberystwyth where an ambulance took the casualty to hospital.

The crew were notified of a shout the old fashion way when the Maroons were fired to assemble the lifeboat crew. This old tradition had not been forgotten and very soon the boat was being launched with a full crew to go to the assistance of a 24ft Sailing vessel. The outboard engine had failed, and they had called for assistance on their VHF Radio. A couple and their 16 month child, had been taken under tow by a local vessel "Ma Chipe". It was agreed to transfer the tow to the lifeboat a crewman was put aboard and the tow secured. The sailing vessel was then towed back to its berth in the Marina with the occupants safe and happy. The lifeboat then returned to station where it was refuelled and ready for service by 18.50.

Simon Osborne who has Kayaked around the Cost of the UK returned to Aberystwyth Harbour today. Simon has covered over 3000 miles. The Lifeboat was out to welcome him back, two different crews accompanied him on the last few miles of his trip. All of the crew admire the courage and determination it took Simon to undertake such a massive task, and were pleased to welcome him back. Some of the crew also let off fireworks on his return and the fire brigade provided a water tunnel over the finishing line. A lot of people both onland and on boats were out to welcome Simon back. There was a party in Rummers afterwards where people got a chance to speak to Simon. Simon Kayaked around the UK in memory of his brother Mark who died of Leukemia at the age of 13, if anyone is interested in helping Simon reach his target then check out his website here and more info can be found at this BBC site HERE

At 15.30 the crew were paged and by 15.35 the boat had launched. A report had come in that a person had fallen down Constitution Hill. The Coastguard Cliff rescue team were also on scene, as were the fire brigade, police and a paramedic crew. After a quick search the casualty was located, and the Coastguard team guided the paramedics to the casualty. The lifeboat stood off and helped to guide people to the location. The casualty had suffered serious injuries and it was decided that a helicopter would be the safest was to remove the casualty. A helicopter from RAF Valley soon arrived on scene and winched the casualty and a paramedic aboard. The casualty was then taken to Bangor Hospital. When everyone had safely left the area, the lifeboat returned to station.

As Flag day was coming to an end the crew Collecting were told to kit up as the Hon Sec had received a call from Milford Haven Coastguard and Aberystwyth Lifeboat was requested to launch to go to the aid of a fishing vessel that had broken down a few miles offshore. With the boat on Aberystwyth Promenade, the crew got kitted up on the boat and then launched from main beach. Treating all the people around to a quite unique Experience. The boat launched and was given the approximate location of the vessel! The Lifeboat carried out a search of the area and found the boat approximately 4 miles out between Aberystwyth and Clarach. Crew member Laurence Burke was put aboard the vessel and secured the tow to the 24ft fishing Vessel. Aberystwyth Lifeboat towed the boat back to harbour, and secured the Fishing vessel to a berth in the marina, the ILB then returned to station.

Saturday the 24th August saw the annual Aberystwyth RNLI Fundraising Flag day. For those that don't know, on flag day the Crew and Fundraising Committee spend the day fundraising around town. Traditionally the Crew spend the day on the sea front displaying the boat and collecting donations. A set of the crews protective Clothing is on the boat, just in case of a shout. Members of the Fundraising committee collect at various positions around town. The weather was changeable during the day although the rain did hold off, Just! The day was a good success with just over £1000 being raised. We would like to thank everyone who donated money on the day.

A member of the public dialled 999 and reported that they had seen a man in the water flashing SOS to the shore.The lifeboat was launched and went to the reported position 50m off castle point. A diver had surfaced, and a combination of Tiredness and the tide had made it impossible for him to return to the beach unlike his diving partner who had safely made his way to shore. The Diver had used his light to summon help, on hearing the maroons he used his light to guide the lifeboat to his position. The recemt Diver training, on the 9th July 02 was put into practice and the diver was safely recovered and taken to Aberystwyth Harbour.

An inflatable dinghy was seen off the North Beach Aberystwyth with people waving for help, the alarm was raised and Milford Haven Coastguard requested the Immediate launch of Aberystwyth Inshore Lifeboat. The lifeboat launched and proceeded to the reported position. Whilst on route the Aberystwyth Coastguard Mobile Unit advised that the persons had managed to make there way ashore unaided and without assistance. The coastguard Mobile checked the persons and the Lifeboat returned to station.

Whilst the crew were washing down the boat after the shout earlier in the day a Yacht entered the harbour under its own Auxillary engine power, which then failed. This caused the vessel to drift towards the east side of the harbour and it was in dnager not only from running aground but also of causing a hazard to the many other vessels entering Aberystwyth Harbour at that time. The lifeboat was launched down the slipway, and towed the yacht to its berth in the harbour and then returned to station to be washed down again!

Coastguard requested launch of lifeboat to assist a cabin cruiser approximately half mile west of Constitution hill, Aberystwyth reporting a possible fire with smoke issuing from the engine compartment. Lifeboat launched and proceeded to the reported position, but en route was advised that the boat in question was being towed to Aberystwyth Harbour by the vessel 'Free Spirit'. The Lifeboat went alongside the casualty and ensured that no fire situation still existed. Both vessels were then escorted back to Aberystwyth Harbour where a further inspection of the casualty was carried out.

Whilst returning to station from a previous incident down in Llanrhystyd the Aberystwyth Lifeboat was asked by Milford Haven Coastguard to go and investigate reports that a RIB (rigid Inflatable) had broken down and was in need of assistance off Constitution Hill. The Boat had 2 persons on board and was in danger of being blown onto rocks. The lifeboat made full speed to the casualty and quickly located it, a tow was set up and the boat was towed out of immediate danger and back to Aberystwyth Marina.

Milford Haven Coastguard requested Launch of Lifeboat to assist a boat with engine failure and 5 persons on board which was dragging its anchor off Pengarreg Caravan Park, Llanrhystyd. ILB (inshore Lifeboat) proceeded to the reported location where casualty was located, and taken in tow with all persons still aboard and was returned to the beach at Llanrhystyd. Whilst returning to station the ILB was then diverted to another incident.

The Crew were paged, and Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat was launched to assist the Coast Guard Cliff rescue team. A person, who had been cut off by the tide had tried to climb out over constitution Hill. The casualty then got stuck half way. The ILB arrived on scene and guided the rescue team to the casualty who could not see his position from the top. Borth Lifeboat was also launched to assist. Both Lifeboats stood by at the base of the cliff, in case of any problems. The Coastguard team reached the casualty and assisted him to safety, the casualty was fine and had no injuries. Both lifeboats were then returned to station!

Whilst most of the Crew were in bed, the coastguard had received reports of shouts of help from constitution hill. The crew were then paged and the boat launched in a very quick time. As the boat arrived on scene, fire crews were searching the beach and cliff rescue team were searching Constitution hill. The lifeboat made a slow pass of the area, searching the ledges and surrounding areas with their 'Dragon Lights'. A casualty was found on the beach at the base of constitution hill and treated by members of the fire brigade,untill an ambulance arrived on scene. The Lifeboat carried on searching, untill confirmation came through that the beach casualty was the one reported calling. The RNLI LIfeboat Enid Mary was then returned to station, where we all went back to bed!

The Open day at the Nags head Pub In bridge street Aberystwyth was a success. The event that started at 3pm on the sunday started with one of the 'noisy' barstaff doing a 1hr silence, such was the golden opportunity that regulars at the pub had donated over £700 before the day. This was followed by a BBQ, a pub quiz, a Raffle, Auction, and a Karaoke. The prizes were donated from various sources and there were plenty. The prizes were donated by a regimental Sgt Major, who was originally from Aberystwyth. More details to follow.

Whilst on sunday morning exercise,the RNLI lifeboat 'Enid Mary'was diverted to go and assist a 20ft Cabin Cruiser, that had phoned the harbour for assistance, after his engine had failed and the boat had broken down. The location was given as 2miles west of a point between Clarach and Wallog. The boat arrived on scene just before 12.30, put a crew member aboard and set up a tow line, the boat was then towed back to Aberystwyth Harbour. Both boats were back in the harbour by 13.00.

The lifeboat was launched to reports that a small speed boat was having difficulty just off the harbour entrance. The lifeboat went to the reported area and after not being able to visually identify a casualty, began asking boat owners around the area, if they had been or reported difficultys! It was established that none had, but some had seen a vessel matching the description of the casualty being towed into the harbour. The mobile coastguard team checked out the harbour and confirmed that the boat had indeed returned. The lifeboat satisfied with the safety of the boat returned to base.

Reports had been received by Milford haven coastguard that a boat kept overheating and that the vessel required a tow back to Aberystwyth Harbour. After no luck in finding a vessel within the area that could help, the ILB was launched. The Lifeboat arrived on scene 5 miles of Aberystwyth near to patches Bouy. The 8 ton fishing boat was then towed back to Aberystwyth harbour. The Lifeboat was then back on station refuelled and ready for service by 6.30.

Aberystwyth RNLI Crew were paged and the lifeboat was launched to investigate claims by the Beach Lifeguard that a small dinghy was having trouble and was drifting onto rocks just off the Pier Aberystwyth. The lifeboat arrived on scene quickly and found a small dinghy just having reached a small wooden jetty by itself. The crew confirmed with the beach lifeguard this was the reported boat and after confirmation, had a quick chat with the owner to ascertain that all was well. Happy that all was well the ILB returned to station.

Milford Haven Coastguard had received a report from the 'Yacht Solus' that a Motor Crusier was on fire. The ILB crew were paged, and the boat launched.. On arrival the crew found the boat to be anchored. The occupiers of the boat had seen smoke and switched off there engines, although there had not been any Fire. The boat was towed back to Aberystwyth Harbour where the fire brigade and Coastguard were waiting to asses the boat. The ILB then returned to station was refueled and ready for service by 15.50

The crew were paged to "Launch ILB" (Inshore Lifeboat) to reports that an object had been spotted in the water near to a boat, approximately half a mile West of the Caravan park at Llanrhysted. The boat proceeded to the location and identified that the boat was empty and was moored to a large fender. After the Mobile Coastguard team had spoken to the informant, all were happy that the unidentified object was the fender. The boat was then released from service and returned to station.

Aberystwyth Lifeboat and a local dive club carried out a rescue exercise just off Aberystwyth. The aim of the exercise to learn more about how to safely rescue Divers, and understand the equipment they use. The exercise was very good and both the lifeboat crews and the divers learnt a lot about how each other operate and the best ways to help each other if a real emergency ever occurred.

A capsized canoe had been seen off main beach Aberystwyth, the lifeboat crew were paged and as the lifeboat was making its way out of the station, it was reported that the canoeist had made his way to shore and the Lifeboat was stood down. The boat was then put back into the station and the crew returned home!

Coastguard requested launch of lifeboat to a sailing dinghy which had capsized and was being swept onto the rocks at Castle Point, Aberystwyth. The lifeboat arrived on scene and established that the two occupants had safely swan to shore. The Lifeboat took the dinghy under tow and returned to the harbour, where the boat was returned to station refuelled and ready for service by 17.02

Coastguard requested that the lifeboat launch and go to investigate reports of a man cut off by the tide, at the base of constitution hill. The Lifeboat proceeded to the location where crew member S Fletcher entered the water and went ashore to assist the person to the Lifeboat. The boat, crew and recovered man then returned to Aberystwyth harbour.
