The Dyfed Powys Police, requested that the lifeboat launch to go and recover a body that had been seen in the sea, just off Tan-y-bwlch beach. The police and coastguard were on scene and the body appeared to be just off shore. The lifeboat was launched, and was on scene within a minute due to the proximity of the beach. Once arriving on scene the lifeboat crew spotted the object in the water. On closer inspection it was found to be a large log. The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station. On returning to station, the crew commented that the log looked remarkably like a human body, and it wasn't until they were very close they realised it was not. Discuss this rescue by clicking here

A Stroll around the Harbour A unique collection of photographs captured by the lens of Gwyn Martin
A remarkable set of photographs depicting the changing face of Aberystwyth Harbour from the 1950s to the 1980s is being published on December 2nd. They are the work of the late Gwyn Martin. Rhondda born Gwyn had played rugby for Cardiff, as an RAF navigator was awarded the DFM, spent two and a half years as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III before settling in Aberystwyth. A man of the community, he became President of the Rugby Club, RAFA Club and of the Aberystwyth RNLI.
But Gwyn is also remembered as a photographer whose unique perspective captured the essence of Aberystwyth life during the post war years.
While his entire collection is now in the care of the National Library of Wales, it has come to light that Gwyn himself, towards the end of his life printed a selection of photographs that have recently been discovered by his family. This selection "buried deep in a chest of drawers underneath his pyjamas" as his children Dai and Lindy put it, has now been published.
A Stroll around the Harbour presents a remarkable picture of a world that is rapidly vanishing. It joyously celebrates its characters, their workplaces, boats, haunts and glorious individuality and will delight all who have a place for Aberystwyth in their hearts.
All profits from the sale will go to the Aberystwyth Lifeboat - copies, can be purchased HERE More Details can be found clicking here

The lifeboat was asked to investigate an object in the Entrance to Aberystwyth Harbour. The object looked like it could have been the bow of a sunken boat, or possibly some floating Debris like a large log. The lifeboat launched and was immediately on scene. Nothing was found in the Harbour entrace except for a branch sticking out from under the wooden jetty. With a very strong outgoing tide, the lifeboat also did a search from south to north outside the harbour. With nothing found the lifeboat returned to station. Discuss this rescue by clicking here

| A concerned couple approached the lifeboat station and reported that they had seen a small sailing vessel with its sail up, clost to constitution hill. They were concerned that the vessel had not moved for some time, and that it was having difficulty making way. They also reported that the boat appeared to have no navigation lights, and the darkness was dropping in. The boathouse reported this information to the lifeboat, which was just returning to station after a Assesment with ILB assessor Simon Bunting. The lifeboat quickly made its way to the reported area around constitution hill and started a search of the area upto Clarach. On route they passed a fishing vessel which had a large mizzen sail and could easily have been mistaken for a sailing boat. The fishing boat confirmed it had been fishing in the reported area. After seeing the fishing boat arrive at the harbour, the first informants were sure it was this boat that they had seen, and that it had switched its navigation lights on as they had walked to the lifeboat station and lost site of it. The lifeboats searched revealed nothing and with the informants happy it was the fishing boat they had seen, the lifeboat stood down and returned to station. clicking here

Two Crew Members Bryn Harrison and Paul McCann were out for a Sail on Sunday Evening on the yacht 'Rotunda', when an all ships message came over the radio asking if any vessels were in the Aberystwyth Area. With no hesitation the two replied and were informed that a person had been seen struggling in the water near to an inflatable boat off Aberystwyth main beach. Under engine power the yacht made full speed to the scene, as did another boat in the area a Catamaran called 'Cats Tail'. Just as the message was received over the radio the crew pagers were also set off. As the Catamaran arrived on scene from the south, and the Yacht 'Rotunda' was just arriving on scene from the north, they were advised that the person had made it to shore. The lifeboat at this time was just being launched from its trailer and was stood down and returned to station without launching. All the other vessels in the area were also thanked for their assistance. So Bryn and Paul returned to their evenings sailing on Rotunda. You can discuss this rescue byclicking here

The lifeboat was asked to go and investigate a report that an inflatable craft, had been seen drifting further and further north from just off the Old College. The lifeboat launched and was on scene just under 3 minutes later, after a chat with the occupants of the boat, the crew decided that the small craft was not in any difficulty. The craft was fitted with a small engine and was happy to make its own way. The lifeboat returned to station. The call was put down to a 'false alarm with good intent' Discuss this rescue by clicking here

| Milford Haven Coastguard had received reports that a Kite surfer who had been under observation by the member of the public for some time, was getting further and further out as the evening wore on, with a offshore breeze the lifeboat was tasked to go and assist the kite surfer back to shore. Just before the lifeboat arrived on scene, the coastguard mobile unit arrived at Llanrhystud and after speaking with the informants they passed on the information that it was a Micro lite aircraft that had been seen ditching into the sea around 4 miles off Llanrhystud. The lifeboat was quickly directed to the approximate area and started to carry out a search. A helicopter from RAF Valley and the all weather lifeboat from New Quay were also launched. A large area was searched by all three vessels and nothing was found. Information was then received that two microlite aircraft which had been seen heading towards land had landed safely, and they confirmed that only two of them were flying. With this news and nothing else found all three assets were tasked to stand down. Aberystwyth lifeboat carried out a search from their location back to shore and then along the shorline back to Aberystwyth where nothing was found. The lifeboat returned to station just over 4 hours after launching. .Discuss this rescue by clicking here

| The Aberystwyth lifeboat 'Enid Mary' was called out at just after 10 on Sunday morning, just as some crew were turning up to the station for the usual sunday meet and exercise. The thirty-three foot fishing boat Lady Jane had fouled her propeller in a drifting fishing net seven miles west of Aberystwyth.
The lifeboat crew made good speed to the scene and took the vessel under tow back to the harbour where a diver was able to cut the tangled net free from the propeller. The lifeboat arrived back at the harbour almost two hours after she had launched. Discuss this rescue by clicking here

| A very windy day in Aberystwyth and with quite a rough sea, when the pagers went off the crew new that someone could be in real danger. As the crew quickly assembled at the station, they were asked to get the boat to a full state of readiness and stand by. The call was triggered by concerns about the wellbeing and whereabouts of a person. The police and mobile coastguard unit were searching the area around Constitution Hill, and the lifeboat was then asked to launch and go and do a search along the cliffs and shore between Aberystwyth and Clarach. The boat launched into a rough sea and made its way to the search area. On its way it was informed that the person had been found and the lifeboat was stood down. | The crew were paged at 14.38 and soon made their way to the station. A call had come in that an inflatable dinghy was in trouble just off south beach. The lifeboat quickly launched and made full speed to the scene. On arrival it was quickly evident that the offshore wind was making their progress back to the beach difficult, so they were taken aboard the lifeboat and taken to the beach. With the offshore wind picking up it was quickly evident that other inflatable dinghys would soon be in trouble. There were over 10 inflatables out at sea spread over north beach, south beach, and Tan-Y-Bwlch beach. The lifeboat was soon very busy escorting boats and picking people up. In the end 17 people were rescued, and 7 boats assisted in some way by the lifeboat. This very busy afternoon is an example of how dangerous inflatable dinghys can be, especially with an offshore wind. Please take note of which way the flags are flying if you are considering going out in an inflatable, and tether it to the shore.

The Aberystwyth lifeboat was launchedat 8.30pm on Thursday 22nd April, when crewmembers, who had been working in the boathouse, heard a transmission on the VHF Distress and Calling frequency reportedly from a boat sinking off Clarach, three miles North of Aberystwyth.
The lifeboat proceeded to the scene, and carried out a thorough search of the area, whilst Coastguard units carried out investigations along the shoreline. After searching the area for forty minutes, it was determined that the call was a hoax, and the lifeboat and Coastguards were stood down.
Hoax calls are a serious problem for all the emergency services, as there is a major risk that while resources are involved in investigating the call, there could be delays in responding to an actual incident, possibly endangering lives.
