Police requested that Aberystwyth Lifeboat launch to assist Aberystwyth Coastguard, Borth Coastguard and the Police in a search for a missing person. The Police had reason to believe that the person was a high risk to themselves. With known affiliations for the sea and Constitution Hill area the search was concentrated between this area and Borth. Borth lifeboat was also launched as were Aberdovey Coastguard to assist in the search. A rescue helicopter from RAF valley was also bought in to help search. After searching for around an hour, Aberystwyth mobile coastguard unit found the casualty inland in his car. The casualty was treated at the scene and taken to Hospital by Ambulance. All units were stood down and returned to station.

The lifeboat was asked to go and search for a possible vessel in trouble, after a bright white flare had been spotted a few miles out to sea off Clarach. The lifeboat arrived on scene and soon began a search of the area. The first informant was able to relay information to the lifeboat through the coastguard, about which direction they had seen the flare. A search pattern was devised and the lifeboat began its box search. With the distance of the sighting, fireworks were ruled out as a possible cause. After a thorough search of the area and illumination of the scene with white Para flares, nothing was found. The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station. The sighting was put down to a shooting star. The shooting stars were bright and particularly spectacular and long lasting.

A member of the public watching the Surfers on the Trap in Aberystwyth saw one of the surfers loose his board. The surfer and board were soon parted and the board was being blown out to sea by the tide and strong winds. The surfer started to swim after the board, but was soon struggling. The member of the public grew concerned for the surfers safety and called the Coastguard. The lifeboat was requested to launch and a crew assembled and quickly launched the lifeboat. After a quick search of the area no surfer or board had yet been found. Reports from other members of the public reported that the surfer had managed to make his way ashore. The mobile coastguard unit went to search for the surfer, who was eventually found safe and well but very tired. The lifeboat was informed of this. The surf board had not been found and it was estimated to have been blown a long way offshore. With the surfboard being white and with lots of white topped waves, being able to spot the board was very difficult. With nobody in danger it was decided to stand down the lifeboat, which returned to station.

Just as the crew were closing up the lifeboat station after the weekly Sunday morning exercise, a surfer came into the station to inform us that his friend was caught in a rip tide and was unable to make it back to shore. The crew went and had a look, and with the tide going out the harbour entrance, an offshore breeze and the tide still dropping the surfer was paddling forwards, but making no headway at all. 4 crew members were quickly kitted up and the boat launched. The lifeboat was soon on scene just off South beach. The surfer gave the thumbs up to the lifeboat and said he was ok to carry on. The lifeboat stayed close by and watched as the surfer made it slowly back to shore. When safely back on land, the lifeboat returned to station.

The crew pagers were set off early on Wednesday Morning to go and assist the police in a search for missing person, who was believed to have gone into the sea. Just as the Crew were turning upto the station they were informed the casualty had been found safe and well inland.
58 minutes later when the crew had all returned home, their pagers went off for a second time that night. This time the shout was for a person who had jumped off the end of the wooden jetty on main beach Aberystwyth. As the lifeboat crew were getting kitted up, they were again informed that the casualty had been pulled from the Sea by a paramedic and was safe and well.
The crew had been called on two seperate occasions within the early hours of the morning, however the boat didnt move an inch all night. It is reported many crew had trouble sleeping that night, expecting the pager to go off again.

Aberystwyth lifeboat was asked to search for a canoe that was possibly in trouble approximately half a mile south west of main beach. The police had reports from someone in the Marine Hotel that they had seen what they believed to be a canoe and with the bad sea conditions, driving rain and wind they were concerned for the safety of the canoeist. Nothing could be seen from the shore by Police or Coastguard who had been called to scene. The lifeboat carried out a search and put up a number of para-flares to illuminate the scene and aid in searching. A canoe was seen to come ashore, but was of different colour to that reported. With nothing found, the lifeboat was stood down, and returned to station.

Lifeboat was launched to investigate a vessel in possible difficulty. The vessel was about half a mile off Main beach and was drifting with his engine tilted upwards, earlier it had been throwing up lots of water but not making much progress. Due to it being low tide there was very little water in the river, which made launching the lifeboat difficult. The boat was pushed all the way down the harbour and out to sea before it could find enough water to launch into. The lifeboat quickly approached the casualty who had drifter a lot closer. On speaking the owner it was clear he was safe and well and enjoying a day of fishing. His engine was stuck in the upward tilt position. Which when run was throwing up lots of water and making the boats progress slow and cumbersome. The crew were satisfied that the casualty was safe and would be able to make his own way back to harbour when the tide came in. The lifeboat then recovered in the open seas, bow first it was then taken to the harbour where they turned the boat around, washed it and rehoused it ready for use.

The lifeboat was launched to assist the police and Coastguard, in searching for a female who had threatened to jump off Constitution hill. The police had received a call from the person, but had been unable to locate her. Search units from Aberystwyth and Borth Coastguard, started a cliff top and shoreline search around the area of Constitution hill. The police helicopter was also on scene. Aberystwyth Lifeboat was joined by Borth Inshore lifeboat and both started a shoreline search from the water. A crew man was also put ashore near to Clarach to check behind some of the larger rocks and to meet up with the coastguard teams searching from the Aberystwyth End. During the search all assets were informed that the casualty had been found safe and well, shopping in town. The lifeboat returned to station.

A Yacht leaving Aberystwyth for a days Sailing, came across a submerged item in the water near to Patches Buoy approximately 7 nautical miles off Aberystwyth. The owner of the yacht recognised the item as a submerged Mirror dinghy and reported the find to Milford Haven Coastguard. The lifeboat crew were paged and soon making their way to the reported position. The lifeboat arrived on scene and found the mirror dinghy floating but full of water. All the equipment was stowed and the boat was rigged for a mooring. The lifeboat did a sector search of the area surrounding the boat and found nothing. The crew of the Lifeboat baled as much water as possible from the dinghy, and started a slow tow back to Aberystwyth. However unseen damage to the boat, kept resulting in the boat filling rapidly with water. The dinghys hull then collapsed and the mast broke away from the small boat. At this point all the rigging and the mast was taken aboard the lifeboat, and the dinghy secured to the lifeboat. The lifeboat then returned to harbour where both boats were recovered.

A lifeguard on duty reported seeing a hanglider, crash into the cliff at the north end of Tan-y-Bwlch beach. The lifeboat was quickly launched, and made its way to the reported area. Once on scene the lifeboat spotted a paraglider, 3 quarters of the way up the slope. The paraglider was attempting to take off again and did not appear hurt. There was also an identical paraglider above Pendinas, and a large kite surfing kite being flown on Tan-Y-Bwlch beach. Borth D Class Lifeboat were also tasked to assist, in case recovery from the rocks was required. It was confirmed that the paraglider on the cliff was the one believed to be in difficulty. With it airbourne and oblivious to the activities below, the lifeboat carried out a quick search of the area to check nothing had been missed and was then stood down, and returned to station.

A member of the public had contacted Milford Haven to inform them they had seen an object in the water flashing, and that it was possibly an upturned dingy. The lifeboat crew were paged and soon the boat was in the water and on its way to the scene. Once in the reported area, Aberystwyth Coastguard directed the boat to the area where the member of the public believed he had seen something. With nothing found, the lifeboat began to carry out a search of the area. An inflatable silver bag was discovered, and spotted a long way off by the crew. With the objects bouyancy and the bright sunlight the bag gave an appearence of flashing from a long distance. After continuing to search, and with nothing found it was agreed that the flashing had come from the bag. The lifeboat was returned to station, refuelled and ready for its next service.

Whilst being recovered onto the trailer after an exercise, the lifeboat 'Enid Mary' was asked to go and investigate a report that an inflatable dinghy was being blown out to sea. The lifeboat made its way to the position off main beach Aberystwyth and soon found the casualty. 3 person were crammed into a very small inflatable dinghy, they were attempting to row out as far as possible. The lifeboat crew were concerned that the dinghy was a long way out from the shore, and would struggle to make it back. The people and the inflatable were taken aboard the lifeboat and taken to the wooden jetty where they were dropped off safe and well.

Today was a very busy day for the crew of Aberystwyth Lifeboat. It was the station open day and the day went well with two successful demonstrations. A good turn out and some monies raised. The day was also the wedding of Crewman Dai Lloyd, with some of the crew attending the wedding all day. Just after the open day had finished and the crew tidied up, and getting ready to goto the evening reception of the wedding, the familiar sound of the pagers went off. With some people still at station the boat was launched very quickly. The casualty was a 16' Cabin Cruiser called 'Sangri La' with one person on board which had suffered an engine failure and had requested help. The lifeboat soon found the casualty half a mile off Aberystwyth, and took the boat under tow to Aberystwyth Harbour. After placing the boat on its moorings the lifeboat returned to station, and the crew returned home, showered and made their way to Dai and Emma's Wedding party. Incidently this makes it three years on the trot where an open day has been followed by a shout.

Aberystwyth lifeboat launched just 6 minutes after the crew were paged, to go and rescue two people who were cut off by a rapidly rising tide. The two people from the Liverpool area had gone out for a walk along the beach, just South of Morfa Bychan Caravan park. The tide quickly came in, and they were cut off from getting back to the caravan park beach. They immediately phoned the coastguard who paged the lifeboat crew. The lifeboat was soon on scene and with the sea calm, the crew walked the boat into shore and took the two casualties aboard. The lifeboat then returned to Aberystwyth Harbour with the casualties aboard, safe, well and dry.

The lifeboat was tasked to goto the assistance of a 20' Fishing Vessel, which had grounded itself on rocks. The RNLI lifeboat soon arrived on scene approximately 100m off the South end of Clarach beach. The crew soon found that the boat was well aground on the rocks, with the bow well out of the water. Borth Inshore Lifeboat was also tasked to the incident. Borth ILB took off the two persons on board the boat, and transferred a Crew member from Aberystwyth Lifeboat. A tow line was attached to the boat, and it was gently pulled off the rocks. Once back in the water the boat was given an inspection by the crew. The owner decided he wanted to carry on fishing and did so. The owner claimed, that the boat became stuck whilst he was playing a large Bass which helped to pull them onto the rocks. Both lifeboats returned to station.

After a any ships broadcast on channel 16, the coastguard decided to launch the lifeboat. The crew were paged and the boat was soon into the water. The casualty had dropped anchor and passed its position to the lifeboat, the lifeboat inputted this into their GPS and made full speed to the casualty. On arriving at the location no vessels were to be seen. The lifeboat contacted the casualty and asked for an updated position, the casualty gave an approximate position using a landmark. The lifeboat found the casualty a few miles away from their first reported position. The 25' motor boat 'Aftica' was taken under tow and taken back to Aberystwyth Harbour. Just 30 mins after a storm had whipped through Aberystwyth, with heavy rain and forked lightening. Milford Haven coastguard received a Pan Pan message, that the Yacht 'I D NO' had suffered engine failure. During the bad weather, the boat had been severely knocked about and the occupants believe this led to them loosing all power and the engine not working. The lifeboat was launched and was soon on scene 2 miles off Aberystwyth, where the Yacht was making little headway under sail. With the tide low and no engine, the boat would not have made much headway and was aware they would be unable to enter the harbour. The lifeboat took the Yacht under tow and towed it safely back into the harbour. The lifeboat then returned to station.

Aberystwyth Coastguard had been asked to investigate an object about 1 mile West of Llanrhystud. The mobile Coastguard arrived on scene and requested that the lifeboat launched to investigate the object, as it was too far of shore to see what it was, and it could possibly be a small inflatable dinghy. The lifeboat crew were paged, and the lifeboat launched. The boat made its way South and was soon on scene. Once on scene it was discovered that the object was part of a raft. Made up of 3 large barrels welded together, the 'raft' was very heavy and half full of water. The 'raft' was towed into Llanrhystud beach, where it was passed to the coastguard who tied it up and made it safe. With the potential shipping hazard made safe, the lifeboat returned to station.

Aberystwyth lifeboat was asked to go and assist a 30' RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat, the station lifeboat is a RIB) called Mako, that had broken down south of Aberystwyth. The RIB had reported its position, and the lifeboat was soon able to find it in the thick mist. The boat had apparently run out of petrol after a day trip to New Quay. The lifeboat took the RIB under Tow and started to tow it back to Aberystwyth Harbour, only 10 minutes after launching. The RIB was returned to its moorings in the harbour and the lifeboat returned to station.

Milford Haven Coastguard had received a call about a small dinghy that was floating out to see apparently with no one aboard, aproximatly 1 mile west of Aberystwyth Main Beach. Milford requested that Aberystwyth Inshore Lifeboat launch immediately and go and check out the casualty. The boat launched and was soon on scene. It was discovered that the small dinghy was a tender from Aberystwyth Harbour. It was confirmed that no one had used the tender and it must have floated out of the harbour over night. The tender was returned to the harbour and the lifeboat returned to station.

The lifeboat was asked to goto the assistance of two students that had been cut off by the tide at the base of Constitution Hill. The lifeboat was soon on scene, and requested that Borth Lifeboat be launched to assist. Aberystwyth lifeboat got in close, and crewmember T Chase went ashore to talk to the casualties, asses any medical problems and ensure they were safe and warm. Borth ILB arrived on scene soon after. Borth lifeboat is an IB1 inflatable, that is ideally suited to inshore situations where larger lifeboat cannot operate as safely. The D Class went into the cove, recovered the 2 casualties and the crewman. All people were then passed to Aberystwyth lifeboat, and quickly returned to the harbour a bit wet and cold but happy to have been rescued.

Just after a large squall had hit Aberystwyth, the lifeboat was launched to goto the assistance of a small 17' day sailing dinghy. On its way to Aberystwyth, the boat had lowered its sails and was making best headway to Aberystwyth Harbour when the weather hit. The boat was slammed over more than once, rigging was broken, and waves were breaking over the boat. The two crew on board had become very wet and got word out they needed assistance. The lifeboat was launched within 6 minutes of the pagers going off, and was on scene 2 minutes later. With the squall passing and the seas calming down the boat had managed to start making headway again. The lifeboat stood by and escorted the shaken sailors into the safety of Aberystwyth Harbour.

After a long morning of leading out the Irish RIB run groups and then normal Sunday training, the crew were paged mid afternoon to goto the assistance of a large Yacht. The casualty vessel 'Bridesmaids' a 33' Westerly Discus, with two people on board had become entangled in a pot buoys floating line. The line had fouled the propeller and was preventing the boat from moving. After requesting assistance from Milford Haven Coastguard the lifeboat was soon launched. With a very low tide, the stations tractor was put to full use in getting the boat to a suitable launching depth. Once launched the Lifeboat was quickly on scene. An attempt was made to free the line, but it was stuck fast around the propeller. The crew cut the line, and took the casualty in tow. With the low water, the large the boat was taken to a safe anchorage off Tany-y-Bwlch beach. The lifeboat left the casualty but arranged to return later when there was suitable depth for the yacht to enter the harbour. At 20.30 the lifeboat launched again, proceeded to the casualty and took it under tow. It was then taken to a berth in the Aberystwyth Harbour where the entangled line could be removed tomorrow at low water. The lifeboat then returned to station just after 22.00.

After being out for 2 hours to guide and welcome in the Ribs traveling from Ireland, the boat was cleaned and put away and a lot of the crew were in the crew room getting ready to go home. The pagers then went off and the crew immediately got the message that a person had gone into the water at the end of the wooden jetty near to Aberystwyth Harbour. The person had entered the water fully clothed and had left all their belongings on the wooden jetty. Within a few minutes of the pagers going off the lifeboat was launched and on scene. The casualty was taken aboard the lifeboat and passed to a waiting ambulance in the Marina. Police recovered the casualties Items. The lifeboat then returned to base where it was refueled and ready for service.

What is quickly becoming an annual event, will take place again this weekend to raise funds for the RNLI. Approximately 15 RIBS will be traveling from Kinsale in southern Ireland to Aberystwyth in one day. The rib run raised over 30000E last year and was a great success. The boats are due into the Aberystwyth harbour at 5.30pm although this may be delayed depending on weather and other factors. The boats will leave on Sunday morning. We would like as many people as possible to turn up and welcome the boats into the harbour after their grueling journey. UPDATE: The Ribs have returned safely to Ireland, lots of photos and more to be posted soon.

For the second night in a row the lifeboat crew were awaken with the familiar beep beep beep of their pagers. On arrival at station the crew got kitted up and prepared the boat to go. The casualty was a male standing on Constitution hill threatening to jump off. The lifeboat was asked to launch but to stand off so they did not spook the casualty. Unlike the previous night the weather had deteriorated, the lifeboat left the harbour and launched in strong NW winds of force 6, with a rough sea state. The crew decided the best course of action was to remain in the safe haven of the harbour, untill they were needed. From the harbour the lifeboat could be at the base of Constitution hill within seconds if need be. Borth lifeboat were also launched to assist, and had a very bumpy ride to the scene. As it was getting close to the operational limit of Borth's D-Class, Aberystwyth lifeboat proceeded north out of the harbour in case Borth required any assistance. With the weather conditions on scene bad, Milford Haven coastguard requested that New Quay All weather lifeboat attend the scene to provide backup for the two inshore lifeboats. Just after New Quay were requested to launch the police had managed to talk the casualty down. All assets were stood down. Borth's trip back North was against the wind, rain and tide so the mobile coastguard unit was asked to keep an eye on them. Aberystwyth lifeboat returned to station, but volunteered to keep the boat afloat and crewed until they heard that their colleagues had arrived safely back at Borth. Once they were safely back the lifeboat was refueled, and rehoused and the crews headed home at 3.30 in the morning.

The Lifeboat and Coastguard rescue teams were asked by the Police to join the search for a 71yr old Male who had gone missing. The gentleman suffered from Parkinsons disease and there was concern over his safety and whereabouts. He had been visiting Aberystwyth for the day, and had gone off for a walk on his own. He had not returned so his wife raised the alarm. The lifeboat and Coastguard searched all of the coastline from South beach to Clarach just North of Aberystwyth. Particular attention was paid to the area around Constitution hill as this was believed to be the area where the casualty may be. A search and rescue helicopter with FLIR (forward looking infra-red) was requested and sent from Chivenor RAF base in Devon. By the time the helicopter arrived the crew had been searching the area around Constitution hill for over an hour. The lifeboat was asked to continue searching in the same area, but also be on standby to investigate anything the helicopter may find. After nearly 3 hours the helicopter was getting low on fuel and had to return to base, by this time the helicopter had been on scene for nearly 2 hours and had carried out a number of low level searches. With the helicopter returning to station and the lifeboat having completed its search they were stood down. Rescue dogs from South Wales were en-route but would not be available until early morning. It was decided to call off the search until first light. The lifeboat had changed crews during the night as it was very cold, and also to enable fresh eyes on the search. By the time the search was called off its was 3 and half hours since the pagers were set off. The crew then had to wash, refuel and rehouse the boat. At first light the search resumed by the coastguard. Just after starting the first light search the casualty was found tucked up behind a large rock but in a 'critical condition'. Paramedics were quickly on scene and requested a rescue helicopter to take the casualty to hospital. The lifeboat was not required to launch at first light. UPDATE: We are sad to report that the casualty later died in hospital. The crews thoughts are with the family and friends.

Whilst on Sunday morning exercise, the lifeboat was contacted directly by someone who was concerned about a small sailing boat that had left Aberystwyth Harbour. The lifeboat informed the person that they should contact Milford Haven Coastguard and pass all the information along to them. The lifeboat then checked on the sailing boat which was fine and was heading towards Pwllhelli. The lifeboat then resumed its training.

A 26' Motor Cruiser had broken down in the early hours of Saturday Morning. After anchoring up and spending all night out at sea, they attempted to raise help in the morning. With all electricity failed, the radio was not working however there mobile phone was. A call to the Marina office alerted the marina of their position and that they had spent all night on board the boat. The Marina contacted the Lifeboat Operations Manager and informed of the vessels rough position, and that there were 2 people on board. The crew were paged at 10.30 Saturday morning, and at 10.36 the lifeboat was leaving the harbour in a southerly direction to start a search for the vessel approximately 4 miles off from the Aerial. Whilst the lifeboat was making full speed to the scene, Milford Haven coastguard had been made aware of the situation and had contacted the vessel via mobile phone to try and get a better fix on their position. The vessel was able to give an accurate Lat Long position which was immediately passed to the lifeboat. The lifeboat plotted the position and then altered course to find the casualty. The casualty was soon found, and the lifeboat on scene, where it transpired there were 6 people on board including some children it then took the boat under tow. 1 hour later the lifeboat arrived back at the harbour entrance, although it was a very calm day, there was a big ground swell running, and with the tide dropping the 'bar' at the harbour entrance had some big breaking waves. The crew anchored up the casualty, and took the passengers ashore via lifeboat. The Aberystwyth Inshore lifeboat then went back out to the casualty vessel and placed a crew member aboard, and brought it back across the 'trap' safely. Once everyone was back inside the harbour safely the boat was moored in the marina and the lifeboat returned to station

The crew were awakened in the early hours of Saturday morning, and asked to launch to the assistance of a person attempting to commit suicide at Aberystwyth Pier. Whilst the crew were getting the boat ready to launch, a Cancel Launch signal was received and the crew stood down. A quick phone call to the Coastguard confirmed that the situation had been resolved and that the lifeboat was not required. With this the crew went back to bed. Discuss this by clicking here

Just as a lot of the crew were going to bed, the pagers sounded and the crew quickly assembled at the boathouse. The local Police had requested that the lifeboat Launch to assist in helping a Lady who had climbed down into the structure of the Wooden jetty at the Harbours entrance. The lifeboat launched and was immediately on scene. A police office boarded the lifeboat and a paramedic was also on board. They assisted the Lady into the lifeboat and the lifeboat then returned to station. The boat was recovered and the casualty was passed from the boat to a waiting Ambulance. The crew then refueled the boat and headed back home.
