Although the sea off Aberystwyth Looked very calm on the 25th Oct, a very strong easterly wind was blowing quite hard. Milford Haven Coastguard received a 999 call that a sailing dinghy with two people on board had capsized south of the Harbour Entrance. The lifeboat crew were immediately paged to go and assist. The lifeboat launched, left the harbour and made full speed to the dinghy half a mile South West of the Harbour. When the crew arrived they took the two persons on board, who were cold and wet. They were informed that another dinghy was also out sailing. The lifeboat took the two casualties and dropped them off at North beach into the waiting hands of the local Coastguard. They then checked on the other dinghy and the decision was made to take dinghy under tow and back to the Harbour where they were dropped off at the Uni Sailing club with the two occupants. The lifeboat then headed back out to sea and in strong winds, managed to right the capsized dinghy and tow it back to the University Sailing Club. The lifeboat was then cleaned down, rehoused and ready for its next service.

The lifeboat crew were paged and the lifeboat soon launched to go and assist. The sailing dinghy was half a mile off Castle Point when the lifeboat arrived. The two occupants were safe and well and so a tow was set up and the boat was taken back to Aberystwyth Harbour where it was returned to the Marina Fueling pontoon. The lifeboat was then stood down and returned to station.

Two swimmers were spotted out past the swim bouys off main beach by people in the Glengower Hotel. They contacted the Coastguard and reported that the swimmers looked to be in difficulty. The Coastguard quickly paged the Lifeboat crew, and informed them that there were possible people in the water in difficulty. With possible life in danger the lifeboat was launched in very quick time and made full speed to the area off Main Beach Aberystwyth. The boat was onscene quickly and found the swimmers to be safe and well and making their way to shore. The lifeboat stood by in the area until the swimmers had safely reached shore and then returned to station where it was rehoused and ready for its next service.

A couple were out walking the coastal path between Aberystwyth and Llanon today, when the gentleman turned around to check on his wife and noticed she had disappeared. Fearing that she had fallen down the cliff path he quickly contacted the Police who set off a Land and Sea search and rescue operation. The Aberystwyth lifeboat was tasked to carry out a shoreline search and also to look along the cliffs South of Tan-Y-Bwlch beach. Aberystwyth Coastguard were on also soon on scene to carry out a search at the top of the cliffs, they were backed up by extra teams from Borth Coastguard. The police were also involved in the search and a Rescue Helicopter R122 from RAF Valley arrived on scene after approximately 40 mins to search from the air. A detailed search of the Cliffs, sea and beach area were carried out by the units and the search was being expanded more inland when the Helicopter spotted the lady a lot further South on the Coastal path. Whilst out on exercise the lifeboat met up with a Rib and Yacht that were treating a group of visiting children from Chernobyl to a trip around the bay. Whilst the group was being shown a small demonstration, the RIB's engine cut out and was unable to start or make way back to Aberystwyth. At this point the RIB was approximately half a mile West of Clarach Bay. The boat informed the lifeboat of its problems and it was towed safely back to Aberystwyth with its three crew. The lifeboat then proceeded back out to sea to continue with its exercise.

| The Aberystwyth Lifeboat was asked if it could launch and go and assist the Fishing Vessel 'Golden Promise'. One of the crew had become quite ill and the skipper decided he should be taken back to shore. The location of the fishing boat was approximately 9 miles NW of Aberystwyth. With it being a Sunday Morning, there was a good number of crew members already at station, so the boat was quickly launched and on its way. The lifeboat arrived on scene after 20 mins and went alongside where the casualty was transferred to the lifeboat. On the way back to Station the casualty was assessed by the Lifeboat crew and it was decided an ambulance was not required, the casualty had suffered sea sickness from being on the rolling fishing boat for a while. Once back in the harbour the casualty had improved slightly and was happy to walk home. It was then decided to recover the lifeboat and give it a good clean.clicking here.

After a very hot and still day in Aberystwyth the weather changed quickly when a strong Southerly wind began to blow upto force 5. One boat in the bay, a 21' motor boat decided they should head back to the harbour. As they started to motor into the wind their engine stopped working, and they were soon pushed Northwards. They quickly contacted Milford Haven Coastguard who paged the lifeboat crew. The Lifeboat was launched and in the water within 5 minutes of the crews pagers going off. The crew was directed to the casualty approximately half a mile off Constitution Hill. Once on scene they assessed that no one needed medical attention. The casualty vessel had two people on board one of whom could not swim and who was not happy with the sudden change in weather conditions, the lifeboat crew provided a lifejacket and rigged up a tow. The vessel was safely towed back into Aberystwyth Harbour and taken to the Marina slipway so the owner could recover his boat.

| Milford Haven Coastguard received reports that a boat was on fire in front of the Aberystwyth Technium and Welsh Assembly Government offices. The lifeboat crew was paged immediately and asked to launch to assist the vessel. The boat was quickly in the water and on scene almost immediately as the offices overlook the Marina and harbour where the lifeboat launches, and where it was believed the casualty boat was. Just after launching the coastguard was informed that the boat had run itself up the Marina slipway. The lifeboat arrived on scene, verified no one was in the water and that the fire was out. It transpired that the small motor boat, had suffered an engine fire, which had gone out. With everyone safe and happy, the lifeboat returned to station. clicking here.

A small Yacht entering Aberystwyth Harbour on a spring low tide, soon became grounded. With the sails partially raised on the boat, and with the strong gusting winds the boat was being blown over a lot. With the seafront quite busy a lot of people saw this and called the coastguard who asked for the lifeboat to launch. A crew soon arrived at station and saw that the owner had jumped into the water and managed to walk his boat further into the harbour and onto a sand bank. With it being a spring low tide and very little water in the harbour it was decided not to launch the lifeboat as there would be no room to manoeuvre. As the owner was attempting to move his boat further up the channel, 3 crew members got kitted up into full safety gear and assisted the owner in moving his boat to a mooring where it could be left until there was sufficient water for the owner to move it to its berth.

The lifeboat was exercising out in the bay off Aberystwyth when they were asked by the Coastguard to go and investiage reports that a car was on the beach at the foot of the cliffs North of Constitution Hill. The lifeboat made its way to the scene, where they confirmed they could see a car sitting on its roof. Two crew members were put ashore with first aid equipment to check if the car had any occupants. On reaching the shore the car was found to be very damaged, luckily there were no occupants or any evidence of any occupants at the time of impact. The car was believed to have been from a bunch of cars stolen the evening before from a local dealer. The car had been driven to the top of Constitution Hill before going over the edge and falling down the cliff onto the small beach area.

The skipper of the vessel reported this to the Coastguard. The coastguard requested the launch of Aberystwyth lifeboat. As the lifeboat was launched and made radio contact with Milford Haven coastguard, they were informed that the people had managed to scramble out of difficulty and had made their way back to main beach. A few minutes after the boat had been rehoused following normal Sunday Morning Practice, Milford haven Coastguard requested that Aberystwyth Lifeboat launch and go and investigate reports of two people in the water just off Clarach Beach. With a crew already assembled the boat was soon in the water and on its way. On arriving on scene, the persons had been helped ashore by Canoeists along with their inflatable Dinghy. The lifeboat began to head back to the station when they noticed another inflatable dinghy a long way off between Aberystwyth and Clarach. The lifeboat approached the inflatable, and checked everything was ok. The occupants were attempting to paddle from Clarach to Aberystwyth. On advice from the lifeboat the people and their boat were taken in to the main beach. On its approach to main beach, the lifeboat crew spotted some people at the bottom of Constitution Hill, the lifeboat approached and warned the people the tide was rising and they would be cut off. They then continued to drop off the inflatable dinghy and its occupants at the wooden Jetty main beach. Before heading back to station the lifeboat checked the base of Constitution Hill and found the people had moved on. The lifeboat then returned to station.

Shortly after leaving Aberystwyth Harbour the Catamaran 'WildGoose too', suffered complete steering failure. The boats crew requested assistance, and the Aberystwyth Lifeboat was soon launched and on its way. Once on scene a tow line was rigged and tow towards the harbour started. It was soon obvious that the rudder which was stuck hard over, was having an adverse effect on the tow, and it would not be able to tow it safely into the harbour, without fear of the boat striking the harbour wall. The crewman aboard the catamaran was eventually able to free the steering, and with the emergency steering in place the tow could be made safely into Aberystwyth Harbour, where the boat was taken to its moorings to await repair.

The lifeboat crew were asked to launch and assist Aberystwyth Coastguard in the search for a person who was possibly stuck on the rocks between Aberystwyth and Clarach. The first informant reported seeing a person on the rocks, wearing a wet suit and carrying either fishing Kit or a surfboard at around 8pm. However the first informant had not been able to locate a phone and alert the emergency services until later. The coastguard was asked to find the first informant and gather more information. The lifeboat carried out a shoreline search and put a lifeboat crewman ashore to check behind some of the larger rocks. With nothing found and nearly 4 hours since the first sighting the search was called off and all units were stood down.

The coastguard received a report of two dinghys in trouble just off the Pier, Aberystwyth. The coastguard vessel MCA Falcon, was asked to go and investigate as it was in the area with a number of Aberystwyth Coastguard onboard. On arrival at the scene it found one of the dinghys upturned. The crew gave assistance and attempted to take the dinghy under tow after it was righted. They also requested that Aberystwyth Inshore Lifeboat was launched to assist them, as the Falcon is not set up for SAR work. The lifeboat crew quickly got the boat launched and went out to assist. When they arrived on scene the first dinghy had made its own way back to the harbour, and the second dinghy had capsized again. The crew managed to right the dinghy and get the sails under control, it appeared part of the mast had broken. The dinghy crew decided to sail the boat back to Aberystwyth harbour, escorted by the lifeboat. MCA Falcon also remained on scene. Once the dinghy was back in the harbour, it was helped to the slip of the University Sailing Club, where the students recovered the boat to their boathouse. A motor boat ran aground at the entrance to Aberystwyth harbour and was happy to stay there all day and wait for the tide to rise before entering. His props were firmly stuck in the sand. As the wind picked up, a member of the crew contacted the boat and asked if everything was ok. The occupants replied that they could not start the engines, and they were being nudged by the wind and tide closer and closer to the rocks and wooden jetty and were not happy with the situation. The lifeboat crew were then paged to assist. The motorboat managed to start his engines and had just enough water to get into the harbour, before the lifeboat launched. The boat and crew were stood down.

A call to the coastguard had alerted them to the fact that a canoe had been washed up on the shore, Northwards past Constitution Hill. It had been found by some passers by. With no sign of a person the lifeboat crew was quickly asked to launch and start searching the area where the canoe had been found. As the lifeboat crew were getting kitted up, they were passed the details of the rescue. One of the crew members mentioned that a blue canoe had been lost earlier by a member of the canoe club off the main beach. The lifeboat launched and the information passed to the Coastguard, a member of the Canoe club was contacted and asked to come down to the station. With the canoe not yet formally identified, and a possibility of a person in the water a search was put in full motion. The lifeboat started a search of the area and the coastguard used Night vision equipment to search from a high vantage point. The canoe was soon identified as the one lost earlier in the day, and all units were stood down and returned to station.

The Dyfed Powys Police had requested that Aberystwyth Lifeboat launch and proceed to an area between Constitution Hill and Clarach Bay. To assist Scenes of Crime Offices (SOCO) by illuminating the scene. A person had fallen from the cliff and had sadly passed away. (See BBC News) The lifeboat was also to be joined by Borth Lifeboat. At the time, there was very little water in the river due to low water although it was very fast running. The tractor and lifeboat made their way down river to the harbour entrance and it was decided that it would be safer to return to station and carry out a beach launch off South beach, especially as no life was in danger, and launch time was not critical. Whilst the lifeboat and tractor were making there way back up river, they were notified they were not required any longer. Borth Lifeboat had arrived on scene, and a decision had been made to recover the casualty there and then back to Aberystywth Harbour, via Borth Lifeboat. Aberystwyth Lifeboat returned to the boathouse and was washed down ready for the next shout.
