4 teenage surfers rescued

Whilst in town fully kitted up collecting for our annual flag day, the crew were notified that 4 young surfers were in difficulty South of Aberystwyth.

The 4 crew who had been designated as duty crew for the flag day event quickly dropped their collecting boxes and started to run through town. They came across a Taxi and explained the situation and that they had no cash, and he very kindly and quickly took them to the lifeboat free of charge, which was moored up in the Marina.

The lifeboat was soon heading South, and at the same time with 4 lives at risk the Lifeboat from New Quay was also tasked to assist. Once on scene the crew found that the 4 casualties had been blown over a mile north of their surfing position and although not a long way from shore, were really struggling to make any headway and get back to shore. The 4 teenagers aged between 12 and 14 had not panicked, but had tied themselves together and awaited rescue. Staying together was a very sensible decision, and made finding them easier.

The lifeboat took the casualties aboard the lifeboat cold, wet and quite scared and put them into survivor sheets to keep them warm. The lifeboat then made the trip back to harbour as quick as possible but as comfortable for the casualties as possible. When back at the Marina the casualties were transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital, where they were later released.

The crew who had just saved 4 lives then assisted in clearing up and putting all the kit away after a very succesfull flag day in which we raised just under £1500.

The crew would like to publicly thank the Taxi drivers who did not hesistate in giving them a life free of charge. They paid a big part in the survival of 4 young boys.
